St Anne's Lewes, Flint Wall Appeal

The wonderful flint wall on the north side of the church, fronting the road, is showing its age. Built at a time when a horse and cart were the largest vehicles travelling along the road, the amazing flint work prevents the graveyard falling into Western Road. However, recently, a number of flints have dropped out of the wall, thus creating concerns for its safety and solidity. Specialists have been contacted and estimates provided for the work of repairing and consolidating the wall – currently this sum is £20,000 and likely to increase. We have therefore decided to set up an appeal. This will include a number of events over the summer months which we hope will enable us to raise enough funds to cover the cost of these essential and urgent repairs.

The launch event will take place on Friday 9 May 2025, in St Anne’s Church at 7 pm

The show will be performed by Philip Griffiths and is entitled ‘This is my Story, this is my Song’ (from a Welsh mid-Wales farm to London’s West End – and in between!!’). Philip describes it as ‘Music I’ve been brought up on since a boy … music that covers over 60 years of singing, 50 of those as a professional singer at Glyndebourne, Kent Opera and Opera Rara plus West End productions including Evita, Chess, Anything Goes and Phantom of the Opera. I was awarded a Guinness World Record in 2016 as the ‘Longest performer in the same production in the West End, London’! There will be a break during the performance at which wine and nibbles will be offered. Donations (instead of tickets) will be collected both during and after the show and a free CD of Philip’s work will be on offer if desired.

The next event is scheduled for Friday 11 July 2025, in St Anne’s Church at 7 pm

Entitled The Music Never Ends, West End performers Karen Ascoe and Stephen Rashbrook are joined by pianist Dominic Barlow for a spectacular evening of drama and timeless classic and lesser-known songs such as ‘You’re the Top’, ‘The Folks Who Live on the Hill’, ‘That’s Life’ and many more from the genius of Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and Michel Legrand. Some thirty years ago, the power of music brought Mel and Stephen together, before life drove them apart.                                                                                                                               Now, unexpectedly, they are reunited and, with a dazzling selection of jazz and Broadway standards to inspire them, they retrace their story, to gain some understanding and perhaps to discover a new kind of love.

Do join us for what promise to be spectacular events and help us to raise the funds necessary to save this ancient and beautiful flint wall!
