A Reflection on Psalm 34.

The Psalms are the poetry of the questing soul, wrestling, yearning, seeking God. In today's psalm we are again with a voice that calls upon God from out of the depths of human experience. 'I sought the Lord and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Look upon him and be radiant.' There is a remarkable focus on how the soul participates in the divine. We look on God and can be radiant with God's radiance. Here is the crucial genius of the Hebrew Scriptures, God was understood to be at the heart of who we are, not a distant sky-god but an intimate and yet transcendent presence to be known and experienced, to be in relationship with. 'O taste and see that the Lord is gracious.' Whenever we read and savour a psalm we discover a unique poetry which is both full of the reality of human struggle and fear and also the reality of how God is found at the centre of our human struggles.
